PRE-FESTIVAL PARTY AND SEANACHIE REUNION CONCERT!Seanachie Concert to Open the Festival:
Will Benefit The Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies
The 2008 Arizona Irish Festival will get off to an early start this year. On Friday evening, October 3, one of Arizona ’s all-time favorite Irish Traditional bands will kick off the Festival fun by performing a concert to benefit The Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies. The concert will take place at The Irish Cultural Center, 1106 North Central and will begin at 7pm. Admission for this special event will be $10. Attendance is limited to only 500 persons. Tickets may be purchased online at www.azirishfestival.com beginning August 1.
Until it’s dissolution in 2004, Seanachie was a well-loved fixture on the local Irish music scene. Seanachie’s music is beautiful, energetic, hilarious and bawdy by turns, and features a mix of traditional and original material.
Band members Steve Colby, Kenny Mulqueen and Dennis McMorrow first combined their talents in 1999. Steve Colby, who now teams with John Good as Oceans Apart, brings his distinctive voice as well as guitar, mandolin, Irish bouzouki and 5-string and tenor banjo work to Seanachie’s distinctive sound. Dennis McMorrow adds lead and backup vocals and the characteristic accordion and Kenny Mulqueen takes turns on fiddle, bodhran and backup and harmony vocals.
Profits from the concert will benefit The Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies at The Irish Cultural Center. The Academy is under the direction of Pat McCrossan and provides programs in Irish traditional music and dance as well as Gaelic languages to students of all ages from throughout the region. Academy performers, led by Fiddle Master Jane Hilton, will be featured the following day, Saturday October 4th, at the Arizona Irish Festival on the Harp Stage.
